Art Business Cards

Art business cards should be special. The business card is the most basic of business marketing tools. It can be a plain white piece of card stock with black lettering that screams boring! I have no imagination! OR it can be a beautiful representation of your work, and you, the artist.

I have seen an array of different styles of art business cards. I knew one woman who did have plain white business cards, but she custom decorated each one with watercolor paint. It was low budget, but showed creativity as well. You may think if you are just starting out and are low on funds that the business card should be an area where you could save money. There are cards that you can make yourself on your home printer which can be produced a few at a time. You may think that would be a good way to start, then get nicer ones later when you are more successful. I say this is one area where you should not skimp. Put some thought into your cards. How will you use them? Who will you be giving them to and for what purpose? What can you put on them that will have an immediate impact?

Man handing out a business card People may receive dozens of business cards. The usual response is to glance at the name and then put it in a pocket. It is that first glance that you have to capture and hold. You are an artist. A nice card is expected, but a stunning card will get you noticed. I have business cards that I have kept for years because they were too pretty to throw away. Many more end up in a bottom of a drawer, or in the trash. This is not the fate you want for your cards.

You should take pride in presenting your card to someone. If you are serious about making money as an artist, you need to develop your image. Think of each card as a spokesperson for your work. What should it say about you? This is a question only you can answer. Remember, it is not a resume, but a source of basic information about what you do and how to contact you.

Avoid putting too may words on the card. This is where your creativity comes in. You have to figure out how to convey a lot of information about yourself and your work in a very little space. Each contact a person has with you directly, or indirectly through your marketing materials help them to form an opinion about you that will influence their interest in your art. You need to make each contact count. By designing your business card, you will be forced to develop a concise way to express yourself. It represents the essence of your art.
