Press Release
A press release can be sent to local media to help them fill in stories of local interest. Just because you send a press release doesn't mean they are going to use it. They may only run a
portion, so it is best to keep it about one page in length. There must be something that will be of interest to local readers/listeners/viewers. Some ideas for art releases include: opening a new studio with open house/participation in an art show/announcing a new line or series in your work/a change in status from part-time to full time artist/launch of a new website/new association with a gallery/participation in a charity event.
You will need to do some homework to find out the contact information for various media outlets. For newspapers it is usually printed on the page with the table of contents. You may have to call. It is best to get FAX numbers. Don't leave any stone unturned. The more contact numbers you have, the greater your chances of having your information published or
broadcast. Here is a list of resources to contact:
- regional newspaper
- small local papers
- newsletters for local clubs
- local radio stations
- local television stations
- local branches of national organizations
- any relevant trade publications
Once you have all the fax numbers and hopefully the name of a contact person for each group, you can set up your computer or fax machine to send faxes automatically. You just have to
have the data saved and can use it over and over every time you have some new information to share. If you use this technique often enough, the media people may start to recognize your name and contact you if they are working on a story related to art. All of a sudden, you have become the local "expert." The format for sending a press release is outlined below. Don't forget to use this often underutilized resource to your benefit.

even be able to discover some new talent in our community."
